What is a positive spirit?
I would like to describe a positive spirit as having a constant inner reservoir of faith, hope, love, vision, energy, mental strength, and all other positive virtues needed to overwhelm negative stimulus (people, events, sights) on the outside.
Every human being will face their fair share of unfortunate experiences, but the only way to stay happy, loving, undefeated, and successful is by ensuring that what’s on the inside is always stronger than what is on the outside – having a positive spirit.
How then do we develop a positive spirit?
1. Cultivate a culture of gratitude
Don’t only show gratitude occasionally or when it’s convenient; make it a way of life – Be grateful for life, health, and family and loved ones. Find something to be grateful for in all situations.
2. Practice Mindfulness
Never be so traumatized or ashamed of the past that you forget to appreciate and maximize the opportunities and beauties of the present.
In the same vein, don’t worry unhealthily about the future – the only way to influence the future in your favour is by being mindful of the potentials of the present.
3. Appreciate your uniqueness
What are those things that make you special? Which things will you never give up just to be another person? Is it family, your talents and gifts, health, or your personality? Recognize these things and draw strength from them.
“Love yourself. It is important to stay positive because beauty comes from the inside out.”
4. Surround yourself with positive people
It also follows that you do away with cynical or toxic people – people who only see the negative in you or in any situation.
5. Take time out to appreciate the beauty of nature
Gazing at stars, going under the waterfall, sitting by the stream and watching fishes swim… all these things have the natural capacity to not only energize us but help us fall in love with life again and, by extension, ourselves.
6. Welcome challenges and overcome them
The memories of our resilience and eventual victory over past challenges will help us believe in ourselves more.
In other words, overcoming challenges instead of running away or admitting defeat helps us grow. Every triumph registers in our spirit that the next problem is another opportunity to grow.
“I’m a positive thinker, and I think that is what helps me the most in difficult moments.”
7. Disabuse your mind from negative events
There are so many negative events around us these days, and being in the internet age means that we are daily inundated with sounds and sights of these events.
Therefore, to keep our sense of optimism and taste for life and living, we need to tune-off from things that dampen our hope or dim our spirit.
8. Feed your faith
This is arguably the most important ingredient for developing a positive spirit. Most events we face daily will either heighten our sense of fear or strengthen our faith.
The sense – fear or faith – that we are most sensitive to will determine how we react to events.
Therefore, whether we are overcome by fear, quick to accept defeat or we remain courageous and steadfast in the face of trials depends on how strong our faith is.
You can feed your faith in the following ways:
- Positive affirmation – saying and repeating positive words to yourself several times daily i.e.
“I am the greatest.”
“I will succeed no matter what.”
“I am beautiful.”
- Read/listen to faith-building literature – Bible, autobiographies, motivational books, motivational podcasts.
- Deliberately expose yourself to positive experiences or sights – social media makes this very easy these days. For example, you can follow Instagram accounts that share motivational quotes or pictures. You may start with these:
9. Bless humanity with your resources
Your time, gifts, energy, physical potentials; use them to solve problems for people and make them happy.
On the other hand, there is a certain emptiness that comes with knowing that you are not leading a life that influences others positively in any way.
A life of service and love will always make you feel good about yourself and life in general.
10. Exercise regularly
Exercising is a proven stress-reliever. It helps to lessen our emotional burdens and make us feel mentally lighter.
